Top Tips for Applications

When submitting applications for public appointments, you will usually need to submit a curriculum vitae (CV) and a supporting statement that explain how you meet the requirements for the role.

Applying for a public appointment can be simple but there are some tips and tricks that can help you when crafting your personal statement.

1. Double check the deadline for applications to be submitted

This may sound obvious, but it will really help you to be confident that you have sufficient time to complete the application in case of any unexpected technical issues, or other delays, you might encounter near the closing date.

2. Research the role and the organisation

Familiarise yourself with the organisation’s mission, values, culture, and recent news. Understand the challenges, priorities, and expertise current board members bring. This will help you tailor your application and demonstrate your genuine interest.

There will be contact details in the advertisement if you wish to have more detailed information from the organisation before you apply.

Analyse the role criteria and carefully read the job description to identify key skills, qualifications, and responsibilities. Highlight the most important keywords and ensure you address these in your application.

3. Tailor your application

Make sure your application is geared specifically for the role you are applying for. Reference the organisation, role, and how your skills match the role requirements. Avoid using generic applications which do not demonstrate genuine interest in the role.

Highlight relevant experience and focus on your most relevant examples, achievements, and skills that directly align with the role requirements.

4. Showcase your achievements

The Advisory Assessment Panels require clear evidence for each essential criterion. Use specific examples to showcase your skills and experience.

Use the STAR method when describing your experience – Situation, Task, Action, Result – to outline your achievements clearly and concisely.

Quantify your personal impact – you can use numbers, percentages, or measurable outcomes to demonstrate your success.

Keep focus on how your actions led to positive results. Advisory Assessment Panels are interested in the impact you made, not just the tasks you completed.

5. Keep it professional and concise

Be concise and keep your application to the point. Avoid lengthy paragraphs and unnecessary details. Use subheadings for clarity if necessary.

Aim for a two-page maximum unless otherwise stated in the advert.

Proofread every time. Check for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. A polished and error-free application shows attention to detail. Ensure your name is on the application.
